“Our vision is uniqueness,” says Vijay Singh, organizer of the Amul St. Moritz Ice Cricket event. “And that’s exactly what we made happen. The first ice-cricket tournament in the world.” A great success: Exciting duels and great sportsmanship in the icy Engadin cold. “The top players crossed borders and showed that it is possible to play cricket at the highest level. And on snow and at minus temperatures.”

On Thursday and Friday, both T20 cricket matches were broadcast in 25 countries. This included India, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Switzerland (Teleclub Zoom).

Team ‘Royal’, led by Pakistan Superstars Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi, competed against the ‘Badrutt’s Palace Diamonds’, in which perhaps the biggest star of the event was Indian idol Virender Sehwag. One game lasted a good three hours, the Royals won both competitions and thus took the overall victory.
The sports event on the frozen Lake St. Moritz caused a stir in the Commonwealth nations.

Amul St. Moritz Ice Cricket 2018 at St. Moritz, SwitzerlandTeam Royal emerged victorious in the Ice Cricket 2018 after they defeated Badrutt’s palace Diamond by 8 wickets. Chasing a target of 206 runs, the Royals rode on emphatic batting display by Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith. The former South African players notched up individual half-centuries. Andrew Symonds and Kaif scored very good half-centuries for their team while Sehwag smashed 46 in a series that most of time was played between -5 to -12 degrees Celsius making it the most unique location to play cricket.

There was a good crowd that came to watch the second game of the tournament. A lot of cricket fans came from different parts of Europe to watch the cricket legends brave the chill. The 2 day tournament not only witnessed the seriousness towards the game by legends such as .Virender Sehwag,Andrew Symonds, Mahela Jaywardene, Tilakratne Dilshan, Michal Hussey, Ajit Agarkar, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Razzak , Nathan Mccullam but also showcased their lighter side where they were seen having a great time with those who were once their contemporaries and arch rivals. In the words of Vijay Singh “Following our vision to be unique in our approach, we are delighted to organised world’s first ever ice cricket tournament and are thrilled to witness the success of this specially curated tournament. The unique two-day event against the serene and breath-taking backdrop of the Swiss mountains which hosted two matches in two days. The lake freezes into an extremely thick layer of ice which then gets covered by the soft falling snow, enabling the lake to withstand more than 200 tons of weight, which makes it the perfect area to construct a pavilion village and grandstands to watch and support the festivities. The two teams, Badrutt’s Palace DIAMONDS and ROYALS already have star-studded cricketers like Shahid Afridi, Virender Sehwag, Mohammad Kaif, Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga, Shoaib Akhtar, Michael Hussey, Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Daniel Vettori, Nathan McCullum, Grant Elliot, Monty Panesar, Owais Shah, to name a few. The itinerary boast of a scenic tour of the Swiss local and a gala dinner where the fans got a chance to rub shoulders with their favorite cricket personalities.

This event brought together hostile nuclear powers

Photos from St. Moritz went to Indian and Pakistani media. Shown is Pakistan’s cricket god Shahid Afridi, who was pictured with Indian fans. What’s more, he even asked Indian viewers to put their flag in front of the photo.

What’s so special about that? Background: Pakistan and India are mutually hostile to one another. In the colonial era, both countries belonged to British India, before two nations emerged from India and Pakistan with independence from the British Empire in 1947. With the split came the hatred: the two nuclear powers have been at war with each other three times.

Since cricket is the number one national sport in both countries, the rivalry always overflows in cricket games. It’s a different story in St. Moritz, where the “Amul St. Moritz Ice Cricket” event took place last week and brought 20 million viewers to TV screens. Afridi wants to edge into the picture with the Indian flag and says overwhelmingly. Afridi’s touching gesture wins the hearts of India,” writes “The Hindu”. And “The Times of India” is certain: “Afridi gained a lot of sympathy on both sides of the border with this poignant scene.”
As part of this event in St. Moritz, Afridi himself says: “I believe that as cricketers we can serve as role models and show how people can relate to individual nations. I think that after Pakistan, the two countries where I received the most love and respect were India and Australia.”

Sport can break boundaries.

Ice Cricket welcomes 3 New Zealand Players

Ice Cricket welcomes 3 New Zealand Players

From St. Moritz there is no country in the world that is geographically further away than New Zealand. So we are particularly pleased that three Black Caps players will take the long journey and join St. Moritz Ice Cricket.

  • Grant Elliott, batter, led New Zealand to a World Cup Final in 2015 for the first time in history and despite a great performance, Australia emerged victorious.
  • Daniel Vettori, bowler, in 1996 was the youngest player to play for New Zealand in a Test match when he was 18 years old. He was captain of the Black Caps between 2007 and 2011. Vettori is considered one of the best cricketers New Zealand has ever produced.
  • Nathan McCullum is both a right hand lower-order batsman and right arm off break bowler. He represented New Zealand in Twenty20 and One Day Internationals.

We are proud that Elliott, Vettori and McCullum have allowed us to sign up to three top-class New Zealanders and look forward to seeing them in Team Royals.

Owais Shah

The 39-year-old batsman played 71 ODIs and 17 Twenty20 Internationals for England between 2001 and 2009. He was also used in six Tests, starting with a strong 88 on his debut against India in 2006. Shah was born in Pakistan and played his first 14 years as a cricketer at the Middlesex County Cricket Club. In 2015, “The Ace”, as he’s nicknamed, ended his active career.

Michael Hussey and Monty Panesar

St. Moritz welcome to Michael Hussey and Monty Panesar

It’s an honor to announce two additional players that will be participating in the IceCricket event in February 2018: Welcome to Michael Hussey and Monty Panesar. Every cricket fan knows them both, but we want to introduce them here. Michael Hussey is an Australian batsman with an innings average of over 50 runs per wicket. In other words, there is hardly a more efficient batsman on the planet. This brings the 42-year-old the nickname Mr. Cricket. But how efficient will he be on a snow covered frozen lake in the cold and thin mountain air? We are curious.

Meanwhile, Monty Panesar is accustomed to cold temperatures. The 25-year-old Englishman with Indian roots is a left-arm spinner. Former England captain Andrew Strauss once said of him: “He’s the first on the ground and while most of the others are already in the pavilion after training, he’s still working on his form and technique.” We look forward to witnessing his spin bowling action in St. Moritz.
